As new moms, we are constantly worrying about keeping our families safe. Too often, we don’t think about hidden dangers, like identity theft, that could jeopardize the security of our futures. Several weeks ago my sister had a purse stolen out of her car, which had several credit cards and her social security card inside.  It got me to thinking about what issues she might have to deal with in the future because of it… and the things she could have done to prevent it from happening in the first place.

I began some searches online and came across a new site where people post their own personal experiences with identity theft. Reading some of the entries, it became quickly obvious how easily someone can get your information and cause a lot of damage to your financial future. Often, the thefts began with a simple mistake such as someone leaving a purse or wallet unattended. The stories made me think about all the times I have set my diaper bag down (with wallet inside) while I tended to my son. Reading these blog articles really made me stop and think about what my actions can lead to. I know I will be more proactive about watching my belongings when I am out with the baby from now on.

Looking for some family fun?!? How about an egg hunt? Everyone who plays will win something, and it’s fun for the entire family!

On Friday, April 3rd, participating Hawthorn Plaza merchants will be hosting a new version of the Easter Egg Hunt from 10am to 5pm. Children can go from store to store and receive plastic eggs filled with candy for themselves and coupons for their parents. More eggs will be hanging from trees and bushes. One egg from each store, the Golden Egg, will contain a gift certificate or prize from that store. And from 3-5pm, the Easter Bunny will be available for photos at Eber Jeeber (119th and Roe).

Everyone is tired of hearing about the doom and gloom of the economy. Why not focus on a bright spot, a feel good story? There are people in Kansas City doing their best not only to support themselves and their families, but who are also using their business to help others.

On Thursday, April 2nd, several locally owned and operated boutiques carrying children’s clothing and accessories, will be donating a percentage of their day’s sales to Newborns in Need, Inc., a charity that specializes in the needs of premature and newborn babies that are sick or in crisis. The boutiques will also be collecting new or gently used infant items for donation.

Newborns in Need, Inc., is a national non-profit charity with the local Kansas City Chapter founded in 2006. Its purpose is to supply essential baby items to hospitals and other organizations that provide care for sick and needy newborns. New and gently used infant items such as clothing, diapers, blankets, cribs, etc. are provided through donations. In 2008, over 16,000 baby items were delivered to local infants. Newborns in Need works with local agencies as well as individual families to provide the basic necessities. Some current donation sites include Children’s Mercy NICU, Truman Medical Center and the Johnson County Health Department.
